Chapter 10

The next morning, we all had breakfast together at Angelica’s country house. Afterwards, Mum and Liv went to headquarters to do their usual, and all the agents, except for Imani, Angelica, and me, went back out into the wild to bring in more mafia bad guys. GTB had managed to finagle his way home with me last night. I can’t say I minded, and Abby and Ted were happy to see him, but now we were back, and Imani and I took him outside for a session with the top twelve squirrels we thought could do what Angelica had asked of them. We only needed ten, but it was good to have backups in case something happened—one of them might decide they didn’t want to go, or one of them might freak out when we got there.

We’d spent a couple of hours running drills with a fake house that Imani, two other agents, and I had magicked out of lightweight blocks. It had doors, windows, drainpipes, and terracotta tiles and was meant to simulate conditions they’d find at the mafia compound. Now the squirrels had an expectation of what we’d ask them to do, what tools they’d be using, and how they were meant to do things.

When we were finishing up, my phone rang. My mouth dried. “Hello, Ma’am. Is everything okay?” She didn’t normally call for no reason. I was always on high alert when I saw her name on my screen and the people I loved were in the field.

“Yes, dear. Can you and Imani come to my office, please? I have an assignment for you. Please leave the squirrels there. All of them.”

“Yes, Ma’am. Bye.” I looked at Imani. “We’ve been summoned for an assignment.” Before Grey could say anything, I looked down at him. “I’m sorry, buddy, but I’m under instructions to leave you here for now. I’ll come see you later. Okay?”

He nodded solemnly. Okay. Be careful, Lily.

“I will. Promise.” I gave him a nut and a pat and made my way with Imani to Angelica’s office. Not that I wanted to put my life on the line, but I was happy to take some of the load off everyone else. The more I did, the less they’d have to do, and the less I’d have to worry for their safety. Also, the quicker this crap could be dealt with.

I opened the door and went into the outer office. “Hi, Mum.”

“Hi, sweetie. Be careful.”

I blinked. “I haven’t even gotten my instructions yet.”

Mum’s smile fell. “I know she’s going to ask you to go out there and catch some of those scumbags. I worry. I am your mother, after all. It’s my job to worry. Just be careful.”

“I will.” I went over and gave her a kiss on the cheek. If I stressed about James, she would stress twenty times more because she was our mother. It couldn’t be easy for her, missing out on being there.

“Have to go now. I’ve got intel coming in.” She put her hand to her headphones and listened.
